Industry:
Asbestos was widely used as a construction material for many years throughout the U.S.. It shows up in plaster, some older drywall material, mortar, building blocks, caulking, tile and adhesives, and in siding and roofing materials. It was also extensively used as thermal insulation on pipes and mechanical equipment, and as acoustical insulation in many commercial buildings as well as schools and industrial facilities.
In the 1970’s, the news that inhalation of asbestos fibers was the direct cause of certain diseases, including lung cancer became widely known. Friable asbestos, that which can be crushed to a powdery dust, was soon considered to be a major health hazard. The US Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of asbestos construction materials in 1973, noting that there were already 750,000 public, commercial, industrial, and educational buildings which posed this hazard to their occupants. he current market for controlling the friable asbestos hazard is $3.5 Billion per year, and should continue into the foreseeable future.
